Nature Walk: June 28

Today I walked for 30 minutes around a wooded area. There were large areas of grass as well as different types of trees. Along with these two majority items I had a few other discoveries. Primarily, I found what I believe to be an oak tree (vascular plant) as well as an oak tree leaf that appears to have been chomped on by a small herbivore. I attached the pictures of both the oak tree and the leaves I found on the ground. I also found another mushroom, or fungi, on my walk like I did last time. However, this one is more white-toned while the other one was browner and I identified that one as a Mower's Mushroom. I found moss in a lot of locations but the majority of what I found was growing on rocks. I am not sure what type of moss specifically was growing however I do know that moss is an example of a nonvascular plant. My most interesting discovery was what appeared to be the early stages of an apple growing on an apple tree. An apple tree would fall under the angiosperm category. I found a few other classes of plants along the way as well, however, the previous things discussed were my best discoveries. I also was able to capture a few other organisms such as a dragonfly near the water as well as an Armadillidiidae (rolly polly) when I flipped over a rock. I also attached a recording of bird sounds I heard on the walk. I thought it was beautiful and although I could not identify the exact species of bird that it was I thought it would be interesting to add!

Nature Walk Friday, June 10th

Today I went on a nature walk in a wooded area with a pond! This versatile environment with so much biodiversity proved to show me many interesting organisms. The first thing I stumbled upon was a frog in the pond. I saw a total of four frogs throughout my walk. It seemed to me that this frog was an American Bullfrog. Along the side of the pond is where I found what looks to be Blue Jacaranda, Plantae, which seemed to be planted at the edge of the water and maybe even have some roots in the actual freshwater pond. Next to the pond's edge as well, I spotted a wide cluster of fern plants. As I walked further into the wooded area I found a sugar maple tree as well as many trees with moss, Phylum Bryophyta, growing up the side of them. Inside a shallow part of the pond, I saw able to capture a photo of the Green Algae. It was covering most of the rocks that were at the bottom. Heading in a similar direction, at the edge of the forest in a shaded and damp area I was able to see a type of fungi, a Mower's Mushroom, Panaeolus foeniscecci. Some other things that were interesting that I was able to capture were some wild strawberries that were just blooming! Overall, this walk was a super interesting walk and I saw far more organisms than I expected!
