Berry Springs Preserve Herps of Texas report, 18Nov2017

After a week of unusually warm weather, a gusty cold front blew in earlier in the day, and the frogs and toads were a "No Show" at Berry Springs Preserve this month. A record turnout of 21 people included four young boys who caught us two crawfish to look at. No bats were seen or heard flying over the ponds, but a Great Blue Heron was working the pond edge when we got there. A small grebe floating on the pond gave the first impression of being a Least Grebe - although this is considered a Valley specialty, there have been recent local sightings, so it would be good to check it out again in the daylight to see whether it's actually the more common Pied-billed Grebe.
The monitoring period was 17:35 - 18:35.
Participants were Kathy, Holly & Matt & Ben & Santiago (welcome, Matt & Santiago !), Heike, Carolyn, Linda & Ron & Alexis & Peter, Nikki, Randy & Sandra, Mike & Amy, Christie, Larry & Levi, Tonja, and Marc.
Environmental Conditions at the main pond at sunset:

  • Air temperature = 64.6 deg F
  • Water temperature = 65.0 deg F
  • Sky = No/few clouds
  • Water level = Average
  • Relative humidity at sunset = 31 %
