Inaugural June bioblitz has most observations and most participants per resident across the Prairies

The inaugural Whiteshell bioblitz held June 9-12, 2022 collected 210 observations of 134 species by 5 observers. Based on population, the Whiteshell bioblitz had the most observations and most participants per resident, out of all 14 Prairies municipalities.

Three species observed during the blitz had not previously been represented in iNaturalist observations anywhere in Manitoba:

Epelis truncataria Black-banded Orange Moth was not previously represented in iNaturalist observations from Whiteshell Provincial Park.

Congratulations to four participants for adding new species to their iNaturalist lifelists.

Thanks to gpohl for shepherding the flock of bioblitzes across the prairies!

Next bioblitz challenge will be held September 15-18, 2022. New project can be found here.

Whiteshell Provincial Park - observations almost doubled since January 1, 2020

A total of 3,994 iNaturalist observations had been added to the project by January 1, 2021, almost doubling the number of observations recorded within the park boundaries over last year. These observations document 904 species found in the park, adding almost 300 species to the 606 recorded last year. This achievement is the due to the joint effort of 679 identifiers and 231 observers.

Welcome to Whiteshell Provincial Park

Welcome to Whiteshell Provincial Park, a new collection project for people using iNaturalist in Manitoba.

This project provides a way to see which organisms found in Whiteshell Provincial Park are being added to the iNaturalist database. In collection projects, observations are automatically added if they meet the set criteria. They do not require the observer to opt in to the project for their observations to count.

A total of 2,142 iNaturalist observations had been added to the project by January 1, 2020. These observations document 606 species found in the park from bunchberry to black bears.

Grouping # of species* % of observations Top two species (# of observations)
Plants 315 52.24% Bunchberry (30)
Bluebead lily (24)
Insects 142 23.55% Tricolored bumblebee (6)

Whiteshell Provincial Park has the most observations in the umbrella project Manitoba Parks and Protected Areas on January 1, 2020.

Looking forward to the coming year full of both new observations and uploads from the past. :)
