  • A water sample taken on 03/31/2024, from a small vernal stream in a wooded, rocky area (rocks = New England stone wall-sized), using a small sample bottled attached to an extension pole. Air temp 46F.

The size range recorded for the current specimens was 70-130µ (see 2nd image, a composite of 9 specimens). The largest one is shown in the first photograph. All have lightly granulated cell walls and tapered, blunt apices (like inward turned Dixie cup-shapes). G. brebissonii has been previously observed in this slow-moving, rocky, vernal stream; in 2021: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/72575550). Both geraldojpr and roman_romanov participated in determining the ID and describing its growth characteristics. geraldojpr further refined the ID to Gonatozygon brebissonii var. vulgaris.
What amazes me is that this area is bone-dry during the summer months. Yet algal taxa can be counted on to reappear every Spring... hiding in pockets of moisture? by producing long-lived, durable zygospores? All without roots or an anchor of some kind. Too cool!

Genus Summary:

Cells globose, cylindrical to subspherical, united in filamentous chains connected by mucilage secreted onto the valves. Cells are united into pairs, triplets or longer chains by their girdle bands (cingula). Valve face flat or domed, covered with small spines or granules with a corona composed of larger irregular spines (M. moniliformis). Towards the mantle there may be a carina (a flat collar-like structure) as in M. nummuloides. The valve mantle is not readily distinguishable from valve face in most species. The valve mantle edge is covered in a granular (milled) surface. Valve areolae are chambered (loculate), opening externally by many tiny pores and internally by larger pores. The loculate areola are randomly arranged or lie in rows radiating from the center. Chloroplasts are lobed, small plate-like, lying close to the cell wall. Melosira nummuloides and M. moniliformis are common marine epibenthic diatoms and occasionally dispersed into the plankton (Agardh 1824; Round et al. 1990; Stoermer and Julius (2003); Guiry and Guiry 2024; Jüttner et al. 2024)

Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh 1824: 8
Description:
Cells spherical to ellipsoidal with valves 10-40 µm wide. Mantle depth 10-14 µm. Cells united in moniliform filaments by mucilage pads and linking spines. Mantle strongly curved resulting in a deep wide pseudosulcus (gap between cells), and towards the mantle there is a carina (a flat collar-like structure). The collars of neighboring cells do not contact each other. The valve face is flat, has rimoportulae and is thinner than the rest of the valve and mantle. The valve mantle has a system of closed rectangular pseudoloculae areolae (26-28 in 10 µm) with a layer of poroid areolae with rotae to the inside and vela with cribra to the outside. Rimoportulae in mantle edge, 6-7 in 10 µm, 1-5-2 µm apart. Outer apertures of the rimoportulae circular whereas central rimoportulae have larger apertures with a prominent outer rim. Conical granules at corners of pseudoloculae areolae on outer surface of valve and flat circular granules towards mantle edge. Pleurae robust with pores 28 in 10 µm lying in straight rows; first pleura lacking the ligula. Chloroplasts several to many, plate-like, lobed, each with a central pyrenoid. (Crawford 1975; Hasle and Syvertsen 1996; Hoppenrath et al. 2009; Plinski and Witkowski 2020)

Morphometric data:
Cells spherical to ellipsoidal, 11.3-24.4 µm diameter, 16 µm pervalvar axis. Mantle depth 8 µm. Mantle strongly curved and towards the mantle there is a carina (a flat collar-like structure). Circular granules at corners of areolae on outer surface of the valve adjacent to the collar, and round granules towards mantle edge. Girdle bands with pores 32 in 10 µm lying in straight rows.

Melosira nummuloides was previously reported in the Salish Sea by Gran and Angst (1932) and Shim 1976.

Found on Z. marina leaves. Collected at Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park (MHMPP), Galiano Island, BC, Canada, Aug. 4, 2020, November 15, 2020 (LM) and March 7, 2021.
Diatoms were collected by brushing or making razor blade scrapings of proximal, medial and distal sections. Additionally, 8-10 mm preserved leaf sections were cleaned with concentrated hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid at 100°C for 3-5 hours to remove organics, then rinsed multiple times in ddH20 to a neutral pH. Mounted on SEM stubs or in Naphrax on slides for light microscopy. Imaging with a Nikon TE300 and Tuscen DigiRetna16 MP camera or Nikon E800.
Live specimens were imaged with either a Nikon TE300 or Nikon E800 with either bright-field or DIC and an MU2003 20MP camera. In-situ, environmentally prepared samples were made using minimal contact of 8-10 mm leaf section, soaked in ddH2O to remove salts and dried through an EtOH series (50%-100%) and finished off with 100% Hexamethyldisilane HMDS (Hazrin-Chong and Manefield 2012). Mounted on carbon stickies onto aluminum SEM stubs and imaged with either the Hitachi s4800 or TM4000 at AMF, at University of Victoria, B.C. My thanks to Siobhan Schenk and Laura Parfrey in the Parfrey Lab at UBC for molecular data from the eelgrass and collaboration with IMERSS.
