Wombat is is afflicted with mange, treatment starting this week.
2nd 3rd and 4th photos taken at time of first treatment on 29 July
Large healthy female. Clear view both directions. Left on road where hit
Her head shows the difficulty that our wildlife has with barbed wire fences, every day.
Juvenile, around 12 or 13 kilos. Alone, mother not around. Resting in the sun before getting up to graze again, clearly exhausted.
First dose of Moxidectin today.
Wombat with severe mange with small at foot joey of only about 5 or 6 kilos, who also has severe mange. Moxidectin treatment first dose today.
The eighth and nineth photos are of the wombat after the third treatment. The scabby skin is lifting off, leaving the tender raw skin underneath.
It looks bad, but the wombat is feeling relief at not having the mites crawling under the skin, and more mobile without the scab carapace it has been trying to move in for the last few months.
The new hair will start growing on the tender skin.
The 13th nd 14th photos are at the time of the 4th treatment. The scabs on the face have started to come off and he can see.
Photos 14 to 19 are at the fifth treatment. The skin is now smooth and ready for the new hair to grow. Only a small amount of scabby skin on the nose below the eyes. He is alert and can see now.
This wombat was treated for mange in early 2020. He was young then and around the same size as he is now. I have noticed stunted growth in other wombats who have had mange at a young age. He is probably around 15 kilos.
