Under a bush on front lawn. As usual, I'm stumped on what should be totally obvious. The stem is quite straight, not undulating. Short, ragged ligule. Auricles medium-sized. There are awns, which I gather are not supposed to be on L. perenne. On the other hand, in each flower cluster the bottom scale on the side away from the stem is larger than the others, which I gather points to L perenne and away from E. repens. Since I sow perennial rye on the lawn, I will choose that, guessing that the height of this stem comes from its being protected by a spirea bush from the device that dare not say its name .
