This was a surprise find. I flushed it from the grass beside the trail, but it only flew a few feet at a time and was otherwise quite approachable.
This might be the same individual I photographed on April 13 (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/207104379) as it was patrolling the same small, living-room sized sunny opening along the trail. If it is, the amount of wear on the hindwings is striking!

Basking on sunny rocks at the top of Mt. Pkols with 2 other species butterflies. It's hard to say what nectar source with a variety of plants from great camas to Scotch broom in bloom. It seemed the butterflies were after the "minerals" on the rocky outcroppings.
