For this walk, I went to lewis morris park which is connected to Patriots path, 90 miles of trails that date back to the revolutionary war. I had a super busy morning so I brought my dog and used this walk as a time to relax. The weather was really nice out today, about 70º, sunny, and a slight breeze. I saw a bunch of different plant species ranging from tiny grass plants to giant trees. I also saw a lot of birds, squirrels, and small fish, but I wasn't able to get good pictures of them. As I was making my observations I thought a lot about the methods of seed/ gamete dispersal because it was so prominent in a lot of the plants I saw. For example, I observed the different methods of pollination, wind dispersal, and animal dispersal through berries all on a short walk. I also thought a lot about conservation biology because I saw some pieces of plastic trash on the trails (which I picked up) and I could only imagine how long it would take for the plastic to degrade in nature.
I saw this bee pollinating these flowers and it made me start thinking about mutualism between organisms.
I saw this honeysuckle plant on my walk and the berries made me think of different modes of seed/ gamete dispersal (especially when my dog tried to eat one of the berries)
These small grass plants were very abundant right next to the trail in the woods. The abundance of weedy plants is characteristic of secondary succession (secession after part of the woods is cleared for a trail)
This tree was very tall but quite narrow with most of its leaves at the top. I imagine that it evolved this way to maximize the sunlight the leaves are exposed to
I saw this dandy lion right at the end of my walk. This made me think of how different seed dispersal by wind is from dispersal via animals (as with the honeysuckle plant)
