I'm an avocational naturalist, with a strong interest in biodiversity across time and space. I enjoy learning about the diversification of clades across deep time, and the modern-day ecological and physiological patterns derived from evolutionary and geological history.

If you're interested in reaching out, please do! I'm happy to chat about iNaturalist or biodiversity. I'm also open to collaborations with scientists and educators; I've assisted scientists with information and collection, and I've provided on-site assistance in the production of a wildlife documentary.

I'm not a formally trained biologist or ecologist. My undergraduate degree was in philosophy, and professionally I work primarily as a video game designer, with some supplementary work writing science-fiction/fantasy novels and working on a casual basis in animal care.

A bit more about my interests:

I'm drawn to clades that don't seem as charismatic or well-known as their sister clades, or clades that are highly divergent from or atypical of their umbrella clades. My "Favorites" list is an overview of high-level groups I especially like.

I'm also interested in human-adjacent ecology. I don't see a strict separation between humans and nature, and I enjoy learning about the organisms and ecologies found in human habitats, as well as thinking about ways to bolster the biodiversity and ecological resilience of areas of permanent human habitation or visitation.

On a technical level, I make most of my observations with an Olympus TG-6 or a Nikon P900, and occasionally with a phone (currently a Pixel 7 Pro). I'm a novice scuba diver (Advanced Open Water), and I hope to continue making more underwater observations in the future. I have a SWIFT SW380B Binocular Compound Microscope, a UV flashlight, a set of night vision binoculars, and dip net equipment, all of which I still need to learn how to best integrate into my iNatting.

I'm also a bit of a cultivator. I maintain a few terraria of isopods and springtails, some planted freshwater tanks with fish and shrimp, two cats, and a variety of plants that I am trying to learn to grow indoors; my current garden is primarily focused on lycophytes, horsetails, butterworts, and ferns. If you have any tips for cultivating lycophytes in pots, please reach out - it's a real struggle!
