These observations, as in impalas, deserve explanation.

However, the puzzle may be less acute than in impalas, because

in tragelaphins (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragelaphini) and bovines (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovinae), the tongue is extended at times during foraging (https://www.alamy.com/greater-kudu-tragelaphus-strepsiceros-adult-male-feeding-on-flowers-kruger-national-park-south-africa-africa-image212885428.html and https://www.dreamstime.com/nyala-antelope-sticks-its-tongue-out-reaching-carrot-zoo-human-hand-holds-being-fed-to-image296398239), and
some of the spp. may groom the pelage by means of the tongue.

Intrigued by my findings, I then began to seek similar evidence among cervids.

What I found is that passive lingual protrusion is indeed evident in many cervids. This includes the moose (Alces alces), despite its extremely-modified facial anatomy.

However, a new surprise emerged: I have yet to find any species in which the tongue is dark-pigmented.
