Introduction to the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument

The Protect California Desert coalition is working to protect wildlife, honor indigenous homelands, and ensure equitable access to public lands east of the Coachella Valley, extending almost to the Colorado River and into Imperial County through the designation of Chuckwalla National Monument and the expansion of Joshua Tree National Park.

You may already be familiar with the proposal, but if not you can visit our coalition website, read about it in our local newspaper, or join us at an upcoming virtual open house on June 13th at 6pm.

I'm setting up this project not only to highlight the unique biodiversity of this part of the California Desert, but to help make the case that many of the plants and animals within the proposed Monument boundary are truly unique and worthy of protection.

Please join this project, and if you are comfortable doing so, trust the project with your hidden coordinates. Many of the plants and animals within the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument are threatened, endangered, or rare enough to be automatically obscured by iNaturalist, but knowing the true coordinates is really important for our purposes. This project is administered by team members at CactusToCloud Institute, and we take the security of sensitive biological data seriously. If you trust us with your hidden coordinates, we'll treat that data under the same guidelines as the CNDDB

Thank you for submitting observations from the area! I hope you found the desert as amazing a place as we do. I'm happy to answer questions or discuss the proposal further with you through iNat messages, via email at colin@cactustocloud.org, or out on the trail.

Note that the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument boundary, and any iNat places based on that boundary, are in draft form and are subject to change based on scientific, historical, and cultural values and/or feedback from the community.

Maybe it's obvious, but the project name appears as "Proposed Chuckwalla National Monument". You can join via the app or the website.

I can't remember how to enable the trust project with coordinates feature; don't think you can do it via the app.

Go here to join: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/proposed-chuckwalla-national-monument/join

You can choose to allow access to hidden coordinates on the same page.

Thanks for tagging me! This sounds like a fantastic idea and a large undertaking. You're welcome to all my data, and I"m headed that way to add more this weekend :)

While I joined, I am feel more comfortable with projects that allow me to choose which records I want to add to it and allow access to private coordinates. Just something to keep in mind when and if any project trust levels are created.

Thanks for the feedback, @brianhindsakafundad . I've run both types of projects before, and went this way due to our relatively short timeframe. Your trust is appreciated, and if any changes are made to the project that involved adding more observations, or more people with access to hidden locations, I'll be sure to be upfront with the reasoning so everything is transparent to project members.

Great project! I would love to participate, but I've moved up to Northern California, and it is unlikely that I'll visit the Chuckwallas anytime soon. Wishing you much success.

Joined! Wow I didn't realize I have that many submissions from that area, nice! Great to be a part of this awesome project!

I have more eBird lists from this area than iNaturalist. If I can go back and find any with photos I can upload them.

The natural beauty and the significant archaeological sites and features of the Chuckwallas deserve protection. I support this effort wholeheartedly.
